  1. Sometimes plans change when you least expect After saving for several years, clients might choose not to buy a home, and that's okay. One of the advantages of a First Home Savings Account (FHSA) is the flexibility to transfer funds to any registered account that accepts contributions. Transfers to Registered Retirement Savings Plans, Registered Retirement Income Funds, or other FHSAs are tax-free and do not impact contribution limits. However, be aware transfers to other accounts are considered withdrawals and are considered taxable income and subject to withholding tax.

Do you know clients dreaming of homeownership? We are here to assist! Clients who contribute to an Equitable FHSA between May 1 and September 30, 2025 will be entered into our Close to Home contest, for a chance to win one of two $8,000 prizes. Whether opening a new Equitable FHSA or making an annual contribution, this is a fantastic opportunity to help clients get closer to owning a home.

Advisors, your efforts matter too! You have a chance to win a $1,000 prize if the client you are assisting, in alignment with their unique homeownership needs, is selected as a winner. At Equitable, we believe that when we grow together, success is mutual.

Don’t forget about Equitable’s user-friendly online application platform, EZcomplete®, or process an online transaction with ease using Equitable’s EZtransact®. These tools are fast, simple, and could bring clients closer to achieving their goals.

  2. How first-time homebuyers are sourcing their down payments Did you know that the primary sources for down payments among first-time homebuyers* are:
    • Savings outside of a RRSP (59%)
    • Gifts (38%)
    • Savings within a RRSP (31%)

While 71% of potential first-time homebuyers in Canada are aware of the First Home Savings Account (FHSA), only 33% of them are taking advantage*.

Equitable wants to help first-time homebuyers take advantage of all the benefits a FHSA has to offer. Clients who contribute to an Equitable FHSA between May 1 and September 30, 2025 will be entered into our Close to Home contest, for a chance to win one of two $8,000 prizes. 3. Turn ‘time in the market’ into client momentum

If clients are saving for a first home, contribution frequency matters. A simple compounding lesson helps them understand why biweekly FHSA deposits can build balances faster than monthly contributions and gives you a natural bridge to Equitable’s Grow Your Way Home contest this summer.

Reinforce that bi‑weekly vs. monthly is about time in the market and consistent behaviour, not market timing. Here are a few talking points to reinforce with clients:

    1. “Earlier dollars work longer.”
Bi‑weekly contributions get part of the money invested sooner than a month‑end deposit, giving those dollars more days in the market.

    2. “More deposits create more compounding moments.”
Each deposit can begin earning right away and those earnings can earn too. More frequent contributions increase opportunities for that “interest on interest” effect.

    3. “Make it effortless.”
Align contributions to clients’ paydays. Automating bi‑weekly deposits helps build habit, removes friction and keeps clients steadily moving toward their first home savings goals.

As you continue FHSA conversations this summer, remind clients that contributing more frequently can get their money working sooner. And from May 1 to August 31, 2026, opening an Equitable FHSA account, contributing to their Equitable FHSA, or setting up recurring deposits to their Equitable FHSA earns automatic entries in Equitable’s Grow Your Way Home contest.

Use EZcomplete® and EZtransact® to keep contributions seamless and connect with your Director, Investment Sales for additional support, tools and ideas to help you continue these conversations throughout the summer.

The servicing advisor for the contract to which the selected entrant made the deposit is also an eligible winner and will receive a $1,000 prize. 4. Steady may be better than perfect. Why dollar-cost averaging matters.

If clients are saving for a first home, staying consistent matters. A quick explanation of dollar‑cost averaging (DCA) helps them see why investing the same amount on a regular schedule can help reduce the stress of volatility, remove guesswork and keep their First Home Savings Account (FHSA) savings on track — giving you a natural bridge to Equitable’s Grow Your Way Home contest this summer.

Reinforce that DCA is about time in the market and consistent behaviour, not trying to pick the “perfect moment.” Here are a few talking points to work DCA into your FHSA conversations.

    “Consistency beats guesswork.”

With DCA, clients contribute a fixed amount on a set cadence (e.g., bi‑weekly). That discipline can help them keep moving toward their saving goals even when headlines are noisy.

    “Different prices, naturally.”

Regular contributions mean clients buy at various price points over time, which can help smooth out the impact of market ups and downs and also help spread risk.

    “Make it automatic.”

Align DCA to paydays. Automating bi‑weekly FHSA deposits builds habit, helps reduce friction and keeps clients progressing toward their first home.

As you continue FHSA conversations this summer, remind clients that DCA plus automation helps them participate consistently, through all market conditions. And from May 1 to August 31, 2026, every Equitable FHSA account opened and every deposit to an FHSA account earns automatic entries in Equitable’s Grow Your Way Home contest.

Use EZcomplete® and EZtransact® to keep contributions seamless and connect with your Director, Investment Sales for additional support, tools and ideas to help you continue these conversations throughout the summer.

  5. Digital Payment Options for Your Client’s First and Subsequent Annual Payments for Individual Life a This article has been updated to reflect changes to the Pre-Authorized Debit (PAD) for new business annual premiums – see below #2.

To enhance the ease of doing business with Equitable Life, we have added some additional payment methods to help your clients make their first and subsequent annual premium payments easily.

Three digital payment options for annual premium payments:

       1. Online bill payment - Your client can pay their annual premium easily and quickly by using the online bill payment option through their financial institution. On your client’s banking website, they must set up “EQUITABLE LIFE-INDIVIDUAL LIFE & CI” as a “PAYEE”. Use the 9 (or 7) digit policy number as the “account number” then pay this new “bill”. This is the preferred option for annual payments.

       2. Pre-Authorized Debit (PAD) - For policies where annual premiums are $2,500 or greater, your client now has the additional option of an annual PAD payment. Your client needs to provide a signed PAD authorization form, or a signed letter of direction that indicates they have read and agree to the terms of the PAD. This is a one-time authorization and needs to be repeated for subsequent annual payments.

       3. Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) or Wire Transfer - If online bill payment or a one-time PAD will not meet your client’s needs, such as when transferring funds from another financial institution or business to Equitable Life, and the annual premiums are $20,000 or greater, then an EFT is now an option that is available. A wire transfer is available on an exception basis only and is subject to approval.

  7. Summer is here and so is our new dividend scale

Equitable’s Board of Directors has approved a new dividend scale for the period of July 1, 2024, to June 30, 2025.

    ● The interest rate* we use for the dividend scale will change. It will go from 6.25% to 6.40% on July 1, 2024.
    ● Other factors used to decide the dividend scale will remain the same.
    ● The interest rate for policies with dividends on deposit will change. It will go from 2.25% to 3.50% on July 1, 2024.
    ● The interest rate for most policy loans will remain at 6.50%. This applies to both new and existing policy loans, and automatic premium loans. It specifically applies to Equimax® policies with a 9-digit policy number that starts with either "3" or "8". Older policies may have different loan rates as they are based on the prime interest rate.

*The dividend scale interest rate (DSIR) is different from the participating account (PAR) rate of return. The PAR rate of return is the return on the investments in the participating account over the calendar year. The DSIR smooths out the ups and downs of the participating account experience.
