  1. The top five benefits of choosing the 10-pay premium option As part of our December 2024 Equimax® update, we launched a new guaranteed 10-pay premium option for Equimax Wealth Accumulator®. This option is a great way for clients to fund their life insurance policy.

The top 5 benefits of the 10-pay premium option:

    1. Short Payment Period: After just 10 years, the policy will be completely paid-up, and clients won’t have to make any more payments while still having coverage.
    2. Growing Cash Value: By completing payments in a shorter time, clients can see their cash value grow faster. They can later access this value through policy loans or cash withdrawals if needed.
    3. Level Premiums: The premiums for the 10-pay option stay level over time. This makes it easier for clients to budget.
    4. Estate Planning: A fully paid-up life insurance policy can be a great planning tool for clients who want to leave a legacy for their loved ones.
    5. Tax Benefits: The cash value in a whole life policy grows tax-deferred, and the death benefit is paid out tax-free to beneficiaries.

  2. Understanding debt: A key to building wealth Why debt matters in wealth conversations
Debt is part of life for many Canadians. But not all debt is the same. As an advisor, you can help clients understand their debt and how to manage it. This is key to building wealth and confidence. Financial Literacy Month is a great time to “Talk Money.

    Types of debt1
    • Secured: This is backed by something the client owns, like a house or car. Its cost of borrowing or interest rate is usually lower.
    • Unsecured: This includes credit cards and personal loans. These debts have no asset behind it and often cost more.
    • Revolving: These are like credit cards. The balance owing can carry over to the next month.
    • Installment: These are like car loans. Clients pay a set amount each month.

    Helping clients manage debt
    • Pay off high-interest debt first:  Credit cards are often a good place to start.
    • Consolidate: One lower-interest loan payment can replace many.
    • Make a budget: Include debt payments and savings.
    • Use insurance-based investments: Segregated funds and Daily/Guaranteed Interest Accounts offer protection and guarantees. These can help clients manage risk while growing wealth.

    Why reducing debt matters
Less debt can mean more financial freedom. Clients can save more, stress less, and plan better for retirement. It also helps them leave a financial legacy.

    Your role as an advisor

We also created a separate queue for COVID-19-related STD claims.

As a result, we’ve been able to maintain the industry-leading service levels you have come to expect from us, and our turnaround times continue to be well within our targets.

Here’s a summary of what you and your clients can currently expect in terms of average turnaround times:

  7. Why tax refunds aren't always good It’s important for advisors to help clients understand their finances. Many people think getting a tax refund is good, but that's not always true. Here are some reasons why.

    1. Overpaying Taxes
A refund on a tax return means the client paid too much in taxes during the year. This is like giving the government an interest-free loan. Instead, clients could use that money each month for savings or investments.

    2. Missed Investment Chances
When clients overpay taxes, they miss chances to invest that money. It could have been earning interest or growing in value instead of sitting with the government.

    3. Poor Financial Planning
A big tax refund can show poor financial planning. It's better if clients break even, meaning they don't owe much and don't get a big return. This shows their tax withholdings are accurate.

    4. False Sense of Security
A large tax refund can make clients feel falsely secure. They might spend it quickly instead of saving or investing it wisely.

    5. Financial Hardship
Overpaying taxes can make it hard for clients to manage their money during the year. They might struggle with monthly expenses or saving for emergencies.

Advisors should teach clients about the downsides of tax refunds. By adjusting their withholdings, clients can manage their money better and take advantage of investment opportunities. Aim for a balanced tax situation to improve financial health.

Help clients make the most of their investment opportunities this tax season. For more information, contact your Director, Investment Sales.
