    Term life insurance offers full and partial conversion options to meet changing needs


    Life is always changing—whether a client is buying their first home, welcoming a new baby, or sending the kids off to college. While most clients think of term life insurance as a solution to meet a temporary need, they don’t necessarily consider the power of term conversion options to meet their future needs. 

    Full and partial conversion options can help meet a client’s needs as their life journey and insurance needs change, without having to provide proof of continued good health. 

    Full conversion:
    •    With full conversion, clients can convert all of their term coverage from their policy or rider to permanent life insurance. This allows the client to lock in a level premium rate for life.




    Partial conversion:
    •    With a partial conversion, clients can convert a portion of their term coverage from their policy or rider to a permanent plan. This allows them to help cover off both a short-term need and also provides lifetime protection.

  5. Supporting plan members affected by the British Columbia and Northwest Territories wildfires

    Wildfires across Canada are disrupting the lives of many Canadians. During this difficult time, Equitable Life is providing additional support to help affected clients and plan members.

    Prescription refills

    Plan members who have been evacuated and/or lost their medication due to the wildfires will be able to make early refills until September 17, 2023, through TELUS Health, our pharmacy benefit manager.

    Replacement of medical or dental equipment and appliances

    Plan members who need to replace eligible medical or dental equipment or appliances due to the wildfires should first call 1.800.265.4556 to confirm coverage.

    Disability or other benefit cheques

    Plan members receiving disability benefits or other benefit reimbursements via cheques can visit www.equitable.ca/go/digital for instructions on how to sign up for direct deposit. It just takes a few minutes. Plan members can also call us at 1.800.265.4556 if they need help, a replacement cheque or assistance arranging a different mailing address.

    Mental health support

    Unpredictable, large-scale natural disasters can cause people to experience intense reactions, putting a lot of pressure on their mental health. Having coping mechanisms to deal with the current crisis can be a huge help. Any Equitable Life plan member who needs mental health support can visit Homeweb.ca/equitable to access online resources or contact Homewood at 1.888.707.2115.  

    For plan sponsors who have purchased Homewood Health’s Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP), their plan members also have access to confidential counselling services. The EFAP provides plan members with 24/7 access to confidential counselling through a national network of mental health professionals. Whether it’s face-to-face, by phone, email, chat or video, plan members will receive the most appropriate, most timely support for the issue they’re dealing with.

    Rating options are now available in term and critical illness web illustrations. When you add a rating, the premium changes so clients can see the difference. This makes it easier to compare options and set expectations early.

    What’s new
    You can apply ratings to your term and critical illness web illustrations. When you choose a rating, the illustration and report update right away with the new premium.

    How to use the rating feature
      1. In the web illustration, go to Personal Information.
      2. Select the Ratings checkbox.
         • This option also appears when adding a term rider or critical illness rider.

      3. Choose the rating type you want to illustrate:
         • Permanent amount (term)
         • Permanent percentage (term and critical illness)
         • Temporary amount (term)
    Once applied, the premium updates automatically and appears in the illustration report.

    Important to know
       • Illustrated ratings are for comparison purposes only.
       • When you submit an application, the system removes the illustrated rating.
       • The final rating is determined through underwriting.

    Improving your experience with more digital enhancements
    We’re always working to improve the web illustration experience based on your valued feedback.
    Here are some improvements you've asked for:
       • A confirmation box appears showing the rider selected is included in the illustration report.
       • When you’re signed into EquiNet your name and advisor code are included at the bottom of the illustration report.
    New design updates to the illustration reports now make it easier for you and clients to review. Use these clear and refreshed illustrations to help clients get the protection that best meets their needs.

  8. EAMG - Macro Tear Sheet – Recent Market Volatility Summary By separating the noise from the signals, we believe the rotation away from the mega-cap technology names is likely to continue. Recent market volatility, triggered by a multitude of factors that include the unwind of the carry trade, investor reactions to mixed mega-cap earnings, and U.S. economic data, may present more investment opportunities for long-term outperformance. Recall over the past year that the majority of U.S. stock market performance came from a limited number of mega-cap technology companies and, in our view, moving forward it will be prudent to analyze the source of returns as rapid market rotations may punish overly-concentrated portfolios.

    Inflation Slows (July 11) – Headline U.S. inflation readings increased 3.0% year-over-year in June, decelerating from May (3.3%). With prices slowing ahead of forecasts but economic growth remaining strong, investors became more confident regarding the prospects of an economic soft landing.
    Outcome: market strength broadened with traders rotating out of highly concentrated areas of the market (“Fabulous 5”) and into more economically sensitive stocks that had been left behind.

    • Big Tech Earnings (July 23 – Aug 1) – High profile mega-cap technology companies – including many members of the Magnificent 7 – reported earnings growth that generally surpassed expectations as margins remained healthy. That said, investors were more focused on spending towards AI-initiatives, rewarding businesses with greater success translating their AI investments into higher sales. 
    Outcome: this trend is evident through the divergence of returns from IBM and Alphabet (Google’s parent company) after releasing their quarterly earnings. The limited number of companies that contributed to the returns of the S&P 500 failed to impress investors, extending the rotation into other areas of the market.

    • Caution is Brewing – Following a strong rally of economically sensitive pockets of the market, notably a breakout of returns from U.S. small cap companies, the low volatility factor, which tends to outperform during times of stress, moved in sync with the small caps’ strength.
    Outcome: with a lack of fundamental justification supporting small cap performance, markets showed signs of caution.

    • Central Bank Decisions (July 31)– The Federal Reserve held interest rates unchanged during its July meeting, in line with market expectations, reiterating committee members’ need for greater confidence that inflation would continue to subside. That said, policymakers signaled a reduction in policy rates could be a possibility in the coming meetings. In contrast, the Bank of Japan (BoJ) increased its key interest rate while also announcing plans to scale back bond purchases – restrictive monetary policy maneuvers aimed at backstopping the depreciating Japanese currency.
    Outcome: the bifurcation between the BoJ and most other major central banks sparked a sharp appreciation of the yen and a rapid unwind of the yen carry trade (see below for explanation).

    • Growth Scare (August 2)– In early August, a downside surprise in U.S. nonfarm payrolls (114k actual versus 175k expected) and an increase in the unemployment rate to 4.3%, higher than the 4.1% that was expected and up from 3.5% a year ago triggered concerns of a cooling labor market.
    Outcome: speculation swelled surrounding the pace of rate cuts with market participants expecting the Federal Reserve to cut rates as much as 125bps over the next 3 policy meetings, up from 50-75bps as of the end of July. Against this backdrop, the ongoing unwind of the yen carry trade accelerated.

    Yen Carry Trade Explained
    • Simply put, investors have been borrowing Japanese yen – a low yielding currency – to invest in higher-yielding foreign assets. The primary risks in a carry trade can include the uncertainty of foreign exchange rates (if unhedged), as well as changes to expectations of the underlying yields, among other risks. Over the last 2 decades, the BoJ has implemented an ultra-low interest rate monetary policy to combat deflation and stimulate growth. Furthermore, investors were emboldened by the Japanese yen’s ~53% depreciation versus the U.S. dollar over the last 10 years. With the BoJ hiking its key interest rate while also announcing plans to scale back bond purchases, the yen rallied abruptly. Consequently, highly leveraged investors have had to exit their long positions in riskier assets to repay their borrowed yen exposure.

    Peak Carry Trade Unwind – Buying Opportunity
    • Peak carry trade unwind, which implies heightened panic levels, has historically created an attractive buying environment. That said, we are focused on companies that have demonstrated robust earnings growth and healthy leverage. Given the unprecedented level of market concentration over the last year, we view the unwind of the carry trade as another catalyst for investors to rotate out of the “Fabulous 5”.

    Our Findings:
    We found that the peak unwind of the carry trade may be a buying opportunity. At present, the current level of the unwind is similar to many notable market bottoms, including the Great Financial Crisis (2008), the European debt crisis (2010), the oil crash (2014), the subsequent emerging market crisis (2015), the Covid-19 crash (2020), and the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank (2023). We assessed the degree of the unwind by looking at the one-month implied volatility between three currency pairs, U.S. Dollar/Yen, Australian Dollar/Yen, and Euro/Yen. Implied volatility is a measure of the expected future volatility of the underlying assets over a given time period. Amid strong earnings growth and steady margins from quality businesses within the U.S. market, the fundamental backdrop suggests that businesses outside the concentrated AI-darlings may drive the next leg of market returns.

  9. Digital Payment Options for Your Client’s First and Subsequent Annual Payments for Individual Life a This article has been updated to reflect changes to the Pre-Authorized Debit (PAD) for new business annual premiums – see below #2.

    To enhance the ease of doing business with Equitable Life, we have added some additional payment methods to help your clients make their first and subsequent annual premium payments easily.
     
    Three digital payment options for annual premium payments:

       1. Online bill payment - Your client can pay their annual premium easily and quickly by using the online bill payment option through their financial institution. On your client’s banking website, they must set up “EQUITABLE LIFE-INDIVIDUAL LIFE & CI” as a “PAYEE”. Use the 9 (or 7) digit policy number as the “account number” then pay this new “bill”. This is the preferred option for annual payments.  

       2. Pre-Authorized Debit (PAD) - For policies where annual premiums are $2,500 or greater, your client now has the additional option of an annual PAD payment. Your client needs to provide a signed PAD authorization form, or a signed letter of direction that indicates they have read and agree to the terms of the PAD. This is a one-time authorization and needs to be repeated for subsequent annual payments.  

       3. Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) or Wire Transfer - If online bill payment or a one-time PAD will not meet your client’s needs, such as when transferring funds from another financial institution or business to Equitable Life, and the annual premiums are $20,000 or greater, then an EFT is now an option that is available. A wire transfer is available on an exception basis only and is subject to approval.

    Help your clients during this time of isolation and self-distancing by letting them know about banking online. Online banking is an easy and convenient way for your clients to make additional contributions to non-registered savings plans, Tax-Free Savings Accounts or even last-minute contributions to a Retirement Savings Plan.

    Deposits will be made according to the instructions on file. Advisors will receive the regular commissions for any deposits made. Please note that all deposits must originate from the policy owner's bank account.

    We know that business still needs to happen, even in times of uncertainty. EZcomplete® can help with that. With our non face-to-face functionality, EZcomplete allows you to remotely connect with your clients. Once the online application is complete, EZcomplete sends your client a passcode that gives secure access to review documents and allows your client to provide an electronic signature. You only need to provide your client’s email address.

    Limited Trading Authorization
    Need to make some fund adjustments for your client? Limited Trading Authorization (LTA) is built into the Pivotal SelectTM and Guaranteed Interest Account applications to simplify the process of submitting client requests. Alternatively, the Limited Trading Authorization Form # 14 can be completed. Discretionary trading is not permitted. The advisor must have documented the client’s instructions in the client file. To learn more, click here.
     
    Client Access
    Does your client need to make changes to a pre-authorized deposit or beneficiary information, address or banking information? Does your client have a Client Access® account? Client Access is Equitable’s secure online client site that connects clients to tools and policy information. To create a new Equitable Client Access account, your client will need to reference the policy number(s). By registering for Equitable Client Access, policyholders and annuitants can make changes and view information such as:

    Details of investment holdings including:

    • Up-to-date market value of investments;

    • Guaranteed Interest Account (GIA) maturity dates and values;

    • Premium amounts, death and maturity guarantees and beneficiary information; and

    • Recent account activity.

    Details of Payout Annuities including:

    • Next payment date;

    • Annual income and payment guarantee details; and

    • Beneficiary and Annuitant information.
