  1. Extending Homeweb to plan members who are losing coverage

    We know these are difficult times for Canadian employers and their employees.

    As businesses temporarily suspend operations to help stop the spread of COVID-19, some employers have had to make the difficult decision to temporarily lay off employees or put their benefits coverage on hold.

    So we are pleased to announce that Homewood Health® and Equitable Life® will extend access to Homeweb, a personalized online mental health and wellness portal, for up to 120 days for plan members who have temporarily lost their benefits coverage due to COVID-19.

    Employees and their family members will continue to have access to the Homeweb website and mobile app, including:

    • iVolve, Homewood’s online self-directed Cognitive Behavioural Therapy treatment tool to help manage mild to moderate anxiety and depression;
    • Resources and information to support themselves and their family members through the COVID-19 pandemic;
    • An interactive online Health Risk Assessment to help identify and address health risks; and
    • An online library of interactive tools, assessments and 20 different e-courses that allow each user to learn at his/her own pace.

    This will allow businesses undergoing financial hardship to provide some support to employees who are temporarily without benefits coverage.

  2. Equitable Life creates guide to accessing virtual healthcare at no cost

    With many health clinics closed and the healthcare system under strain, people are looking to access a doctor and other health providers virtually.

    To make it easier for plan members, we’ve created the Guide to Accessing Virtual Health Care Services on the plan member section of EquitableHealth.ca. This online resource provides information about and links to a range of virtual health services they need to take care of their health and the health of their family during these challenging times.

    The Guide also indicates which services can be accessed for free. In some provinces, online doctor visits are now covered by the public health plan, so there’s no cost to the patient to access them as long as they provide their valid provincial health card. In other provinces, the nominal fee can be claimed on a Health Care Spending Account.

    We will continue to update the Guide as more virtual healthcare providers and services become available.

  3. NEW Process for Applications for Term Conversion to Equimax with Excelerator Deposit Option (EDO) Great news! We are now allowing term conversions to Equimax with EDO with no additional underwriting provided the maximum net amount at risk (NAAR) for the new Equimax policy does not exceed the Term coverage amount being converted.

    We have created an easy-to-use Excel worksheet (1616 worksheet) to help you confirm that the conversion to Equimax with EDO satisfies the NAAR requirement and will assist you with properly completing the Application for Term Conversion (Form 1616). This worksheet is only for use in situations where the term coverage is to be converted to Equimax with EDO and must be submitted along with the signed illustration and completed Application for Term Conversion. The maximum NAAR can be found on the Underwriting page of the illustration report.

    The signed Equimax illustration, application and term conversion worksheet should be sent to: inforcelifemail@equitable.ca.

  5. Backdating of insurance applications – New rule now in effect

    Great news! We are making it even easier for you to do business with Equitable Life®. We now allow backdating of life insurance applications by up to 364 days. Previously, the maximum backdating period was six (6) months.

    Backdating can result in lower total premiums for the client over the life of a policy based on their younger age at time of application. But clients must pay all the premiums due for the backdated period up front. Thus, backdating is only beneficial when the total premium savings over the life of the policy are greater than the premium due for the backdated period.

    To request backdating beyond six (6) months (up to 364 days)
     No special approval is needed. Simply add a note to the Advisor Sheet requesting backdating or contact us at any time prior to policy issue. This step is only necessary when backdating beyond six (6) months as the application will automatically prompt to save age within the 6-month period.

    Note: The maximum backdating period for critical illness (CI) applications remains unchanged at three (3) months.

  7. Life changes and so do clients’ insurance needs We’ve enhanced our partial conversion option with Equitable Term Life Insurance

    At Equitable®, we understand that as life changes, so do your clients’ insurance needs. That's why we're excited to introduce enhanced flexibility in our partial conversion feature with a term rider carryover.

    What’s changed?

    1.    Partial conversions are available for both term standalone plans and term riders. Previously, partial conversions were limited to term standalone plans only.

    2.    Clients can choose any term plan for the rider carryover, regardless of the original term plan: T10, T20, T30/65. Previously, the term rider carryover had to match the original term coverage plan type.

    As always, the term rider is carried over at the client’s current age, with rates based on the conversion date.

    As life evolves, count on Equitable to provide solutions that adapt with your clients.
