Investing during market highs and market lows can leave even the most seasoned investors scratching their heads. Knowing when to buy and when to sell is not easy, but disciplined investing can be.

Dollar cost averaging with Equitable Life® is designed to provide a long-term investment solution. This strategy helps take the guesswork out of knowing when to get into the market. It can also provide consistency for a long-term financial plan regardless of whether there is a lot or a little to invest.

  4. The Equitable Gives Back Contest – Start spreading the word! Equitable Life of Canada is celebrating our 100th Anniversary in 2020, and we’re busy planning a year of events and activities so we can celebrate this significant milestone with our employees, clients, wholesalers and advisors across Canada.

A big part of who we are as a company is our commitment to help strengthen the communities where we operate by supporting a variety of charitable initiatives that help to improve the quality of life for the people living there. We are proud to launch the Equitable Gives Back Contest. Our goal is to give $10,000 to five registered charities operating in Canada.

All it takes to enter is an original essay (not less than 100 words, not more than 500) describing the way in which a charitable organization could use $10,000 to help further their charitable purpose and improve life for Canadians.

Reach out to your clients, tell them about the contest, and encourage them to visit www.equitable100.ca to see if they are eligible! All entries must be submitted by March 31, 2020.

  8. Update: Employment Insurance (EI) Sickness Benefit Extension As it proposed in its 2022 Budget, the federal government has confirmed it is extending the Employment Insurance (EI) Sickness Benefits period from 15 weeks to 26 weeks later this year. The official implementation date and details have not yet been confirmed by the government and we will share further details once they are available. In the meantime, here’s what you need to know.

We will not require or implement any changes to our disability plan designs based on this extension. However, plan sponsors may wish to amend their short-term disability (STD) and long-term disability (LTD) plans and policies to align with the new 26-week EI period.

Impact to short-term disability (STD) benefits integrated with EI

Plan sponsors with EI-integrated STD may wish to adjust their benefits to line up with the new 26-week extension.

Impact to plans with no STD benefits

For plan sponsors who do not offer STD, they have the option of adjusting their LTD plans to the new 26-week elimination period if members claim EI prior to LTD. This adjustment would help to avoid the plan member receiving disability and EI payments at the same time and potentially being required to return funds due to overpayment.

    Considerations for plan sponsors

Plan sponsors who amend their STD or LTD policies to align with the new 26-week EI period should note that there may be inadvertent delays to their employees’ return to work. While collecting EI, injured or ill employees do not benefit from our early intervention services or rigorous claims management practices that could help them get back to work sooner. So, by delaying the availability of STD or LTD coverage, the advantages that these programs are intended to provide could also be delayed.

Impact to Premium Reduction Program (PRP)

The Premium Reduction Program (PRP) allows employers with eligible short-term disability plans to pay lower EI premiums. The eligibility criteria have not changed at this time. The government plans to review the PRP in 2024.

    Questions

If you have questions about these changes or what they mean for your clients’ disability plans, please contact your Group Account Executive or myFlex Sales Manager.

    3.
Legacy: What do you want to happen to your business when you’re no longer there? How much of what you have built do you want to preserve for your family? How much will be preserved?
    4.
Shareholder’s agreement: Do you have a shareholder’s agreement? How is it funded? Does it deal with triggering events like death, disability, and retirement?
    5.

  10. Online banking makes RSP season easier
March 1, 2021 is the deadline for clients to make Retirement Savings Plan (RSP) contributions within the first 60 days and that date is quickly approaching! Why not alleviate some stress by having your clients make their deposits using online banking?

To get started with online banking, clients simply log in to their online bank account and select the option to add a new bill/payee and search for Equitable Life Savings Plan. The Equitable Life savings plan policy number will serve as the account number.

Clients that complete their deposits using online banking don’t have to stress about mailing a cheque. Or worry about whether the money will make it to head office in time for the deadline. Deposits are applied based on the investment direction on file.

Deposits can be made to RSPs as well as Tax-Free Savings Accounts and non-registered accounts. The minimum deposit is $50 per fund and $500 per Guaranteed Deposit Account (GDA).
