  1. Anti-money laundering legislation changes To comply with the Government of Canada’s anti-money laundering legislation and FATCA/CRS changes, Equitable Life® has made changes to the information that we collect on some of our applications and forms.

Changes and updates to our online forms and applications include the following:

The 350 Application for Life Insurance -  Advisors can order new paper applications from Equitable’s Supply Team by filling out the Supply Order form 1390 and emailing it to supply@equitable.ca. You will receive your copies as they become available.
    ◦ Paper applications submitted after May 15, 2021, with a version date before April 2, 2021 will be accepted with the caveat that additional information may be required from the advisor to comply with anti-money laundering legislation.
    ◦ As of July 1, 2021 any application with a version date prior to April 2, 2021 will no longer be accepted by Equitable Life.

Equitable’s EZcomplete® online application reflects the new changes effective May 15, 2021. Any in-flight applications in EZcomplete will automatically be updated to comply with anti-money laundering legislation. You may be required to complete additional fields before submitting the application for signatures.

Various other forms will now require additional information. A complete list of all forms and applications affected by the anti-money laundering legislation can be found here

  2. Make room for more EDO room

Effective June 26, 2021, a term rider added to an Equimax Estate Builder® or Equimax Wealth Accumulator® policy may allow for an increase to the maximum Excelerator Deposit Option (EDO) payment limit.

    Highlights:

    ● This enhancement will apply to adult single life Equimax Estate Builder and Wealth Accumulator policies where the Owner Signature Date on the application for insurance is June 26, 2021 or after.
    ● For the term rider to increase the EDO payment limit, it must be issued at the same time as the Equimax coverage.
    ● Term rider EDO payment limit assumes the term rider is held at least 10 years.
    ● The illustration system and EZcomplete application will calculate the maximum EDO payment including any increase from a term rider.
    ● Policies already issued do not qualify.

Full details about the changes can be found in the transition rules.

Who can benefit from this product enhancement?
Your clients who have a temporary insurance need and add a term rider to their Equimax plan may be able to take advantage of the additional exempt room and higher EDO payment limits to build the policy values. Make Equimax® your first choice for your clients’ whole life insurance needs.

New Illustration software is now available
The updated illustration software will be available for download after 9 a.m. ET on Friday, June 25, 2021.

  3. Enhancements to ID Verification and Business Forms

We have made enhancements to some of our forms and created an additional form to help make it easier for you to do business with Equitable Life®.

The first enhancement is an update to the ID Verification section to allow for Third Party ID Verification when a client doesn’t want to provide ID documents to an Advisor. They are now given additional options to either use the Alternative Identification requirements, or consent to Equitable Life verifying their identity through a third party service provider. We’ve also clarified in the Advisor declaration that they can’t sign for their own policies as they aren’t able to validate their own ID.

The above changes have been made to the following forms:

The second enhancement is an update to Business forms. We’ve created a new form, 2004 Signing Authorities Certificate, to help Businesses provide the Signing Authority information needed more easily!  Forms 594 and 682ENT have been updated to point to the new Form 2004 and also have new “Ownership structure” requirements added in section 2.

Equitable Life is proud to announce that it has partnered with Canadian digital health innovator, Cloud DX, to provide a Virtual Monitoring Care service as part of its Critical Illness packages. We are pleased to offer this service on all new and existing EquiLiving coverages.

Today more people than ever are surviving and living with not only just the physical, but also the financial effects of their illness.

  6. Give clients guaranteed retirement income with Payout Annuities
With increased market volatility and interest rates higher than we have seen for much of the past decade, now is a great time to consider payout annuities. Payout annuities can provide regular guaranteed income regardless of how markets perform.

Clients using only a Systematic Withdrawal Plan (SWP) for retirement income are potentially vulnerable during times of market volatility due to the sequence-of-returns risk.1 When markets are down, more units are redeemed to cover income needs. When markets later rise, clients are not able to participate fully in the recovery because more units were redeemed to provide income. That is why having a guaranteed income component, like a payout annuity, as part of an overall retirement strategy is so important.

Three great reasons to consider Equitable Life® for your payout annuity business:

    1. Choose from a variety of payout annuity options including:

         A. Life Annuity – guaranteed income for one life
         B. Joint Life Annuity – guaranteed income for two lives
         C. Term Certain – guaranteed income for a specific period of time (5 to 30 years)
         D. Term Certain to Age 90 – guaranteed income until age 90

    2. Attractive rates, particularly in Registered and Term Certain Annuities

    3. Step Up Your Wealth Sales program - 25% of payout annuity net sales qualify for the 0.75% bonus commission earned on net deposits for 20222

1Sequence-of-returns risk, or sequence risk, is the risk that an investor will experience negative portfolio returns very late in their working life and/or early in retirement.
2All eligible deposits, sales, and redemptions occurring between January 1 and December 31, 2022, will be used to calculate an advisor’s 2022 net deposits.

  8. Updated Temporary Resident Guidelines We are excited to announce that we have liberalized our Temporary Resident Guidelines.

    ● The validity period requirement of the supporting documentation for all Temporary Residents has been lowered to three months
    ● Student Visa holders attending post secondary educational institutions may qualify for a total coverage of $500,000, and – if employed – even for $1,000,000

We will now ask for the following information:

    ● Information regarding the educational institution and programme for all amounts over $250,000 (typically includes online validation)
    ● A maximum of $500,000 may be available for students enrolled in professional programmes, as defined in our Student Financial Guidelines (e.g., medical, law, etc.)
    ● A maximum of $1,000,000 may be available for students who are legally and gainfully employed. For this, we require proof of current employment and the CRA Notice of Assessment for the previous year. Should both be satisfactory, the allowable face amount will be calculated according to the published Work Permit guidelines. If applying for over $500,000, a minimum one-year period after arrival to Canada is required.
    ● Students enrolled in elementary or secondary school are eligible for a total coverage of $250,000. Exceptions may apply if the parents are insured or applying for minimum $1,000,000. We will confirm the parents’ respective occupations, incomes, and residency statuses

  9. SMS is Available for Individual Insurance Application Updates If you haven’t opted in to receive your client's application status via text message, give it a try on your next application.

When you submit a client’s application, you can opt-in to receive text message updates for your new business applications. No need to log in to your advisor portal to know exactly what is going on with a case.

Once you opt-in to receive text messages, you will receive short text updates for your new business applications. That’s a text message when:
    • The application is received,
    • Equitable Life has made a decision,
    • The policy is ready for delivery, and
    • The commissions have been triggered.
Please note, this number is not monitored for incoming texts. Please contact Customer Service with any questions.

In addition to these messages, Equitable Life will continue to send proactive emails detailing outstanding requirements.

Be sure to opt-in to text messages when you complete your next application on EZComplete®.

    ● Upon submission of an application, you can opt-in to receive text message updates for your new business applications. That’s a text message when the application is received, when a decision is made, when it’s ready for delivery and when the commissions have been triggered.

    Cloning pages on EZcomplete®
    ● You now have the ability to clone an application on EZcomplete. A whole family or a spouse can have a lot of duplicate information and the ability to clone an application can save tremendous amounts of time and make for a much more pleasant client experience.

    Jump around on EZcomplete
    ● Jump from one part of the application to another and back again. You no longer have to complete the application one section after another in order. This will allow a lot more flexibility when submitting a policy application.
