Reframing retirement with help from Equitable and the Franklin Templeton Academy
Equitable® Savings & Retirement and Franklin Templeton Academy have teamed up again with two pre-recorded On-Demand webcasts that can help you reframe retirement goals and planning discussions with clients.
Rethinking Retirement Income
The traditional view of retirement income assumes clients will need a specific percentage of their annual pre-retirement income through their senior years. In this session you will learn how our notions of retirement have changed over the years, the difference between the traditional and goals-based planning approaches, and how we can help you implement a goals-based retirement income planning strategy.

Did you miss our Equimax update in December?
Equimax – a better and stronger solution!
Discover the latest Equimax updates
Great news! We’ve made further updates to our Equimax® insurance solution to better serve clients.
Here are some of the changes:
● A new guaranteed 10 pay premium option for Equimax Wealth Accumulator®.
● You can now add an Excelerator deposit option (EDO) on Equimax Estate Builder® and Wealth Accumulator plans with a 10 Pay premium option (term rider not required at issue of the policy).
● We increased our flexibility with EDO. This will make it easier for clients to stop and start EDO contributions without losing their maximum approved contribution room. On top of that, these changes will apply to all inforce policies. A single set of EDO rules will apply to every Equimax policy whether it’s issued tomorrow or 10 years ago, making it simpler to help clients manage their policies.
● We increased the maximum amount of Equimax coverage that can be applied for without a special quote from $20M to $25M.
Equimax is now an even better and stronger solution. For a full breakdown of these product updates visit our splash page.
*Video available in English with French and Chinese sub-titles.
Please refer to our Transition Rules for all the details on processing your applications.

Why fair treatment of clients matters
Building strong client relationships
Fair treatment of clients and excellent service goes beyond offering great products. It's about understanding and meeting clients’ needs at every single stage of life. At Equitable, we believe in putting clients first and building lasting, trusting relationships.
As an advisor, it’s important to build these strong client relationships for your business growth and success. This is achieved by focusing on each client’s interests and providing personalized financial care and support.
Here are some tips to build and maintain strong client relationships:
● Meet with clients at a minimum of every two years to maintain relationships and ensure clients have the right coverage for their needs. Updates to their insurance may be needed with life changes like marriage, children or purchasing a home.
● Regularly review products with investment components with clients. This may help ensure client investments stay on track to meet their needs and align with their financial goals.
● Reassess term policies and riders with clients throughout the term period, and at least six months before renewal. This can help clients understand any premium changes and consider options that may meet their ongoing needs.
Another important tip...
● Document each attempt to engage with clients. Regular meetings with advisors are needed to ensure the client has the right coverage for their current and future needs. Keeping a record of these attempts helps protect advisors when clients don’t respond or don’t want to meet.
Treating clients with fairness and ensuring their interests are protected will show that you are providing support to help ensure your clients' needs are covered. Building trust leads to happier clients, stronger relationships, and more business opportunities to help protect clients throughout their lifetime. - 2025 Elite Advisor Program

Tax impacts of the Canadian Dental Care Plan for your clients
Tax impacts of the Canadian Dental Care Plan for your clients*
Earlier this year, the government shared its progress on the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP).
The CDCP will be available to Canadians with an annual family income of less than $90,000 who do not have dental benefits. Co-pays will be waived for eligible Canadians with a family income of less than $70,000.
Canadians who have access to private dental coverage are not eligible for the CDCP. This means that your clients must now report on T4s/T4As if dental coverage** was available on December 31 of the reporting tax year for:- Employees,
- Employees’ spouses and/or dependents,
- Former employees, and
- Spouses of deceased employees.
This new tax reporting requirement is mandatory starting with the 2023 tax year. Employee tax slips will include new boxes for employers to complete:- Box 45 (T4): Employer Offered Dental Benefits. This new box will be mandatory.
- Box 015 (T4A): Payer Offered Dental Benefits. This new box will be mandatory if plan sponsors report in Box 016, Pension or Superannuation. The box will otherwise be optional.
- Code 1: The plan member has no access to dental care insurance or coverage of dental services of any kind.
- Code 2: Only the plan member has access to any dental care insurance, or coverage of dental services of any kind.
- Code 3: The plan member, their spouse and their dependents have access to any dental care insurance, or coverage of dental services of any kind.
- Code 4: Only the plan member and their spouse have access to any dental care insurance, or coverage of dental services of any kind.
- Code 5: Only the plan member and their dependents have access to any dental care insurance, or coverage of dental services of any kind.
Reports for dependents
We have a report available for plan members who have enrolled their dependents in benefits coverage. Your clients can contact their local service team representative to receive a copy of the report. We are working to make it available on our Advisor and PA websites.
Questions
For guidance on your tax slips and reporting obligations, please encourage your clients to contact their accountant, payroll provider or tax advisor.
Supporting plan members affected by the Israeli-Palestinian conflict*
Traumatic events continue to unfold in the Middle East. Enduring ongoing news of conflict and suffering could challenge many Canadians. During this difficult time, Equitable encourages affected clients and plan members to access the mental health support they need.
Large-scale traumatic news events can cause people to experience intense reactions. This puts a lot of strain on their mental health. Having coping mechanisms to deal with the current crisis can be a huge help. Any Equitable Life plan member who needs mental health support can visit Homeweb.ca/equitable to access online resources or contact Homewood at 1.888.707.2115.
Support available to all Equitable plan members
Support available to plan members with the Homewood Health EFAP
For your clients that have purchased Homewood Health’s Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP), remind them that their plan members also have access to confidential counselling services. The EFAP provides plan members with 24/7 access to confidential counselling through a national network of mental health professionals. Whether it’s face-to-face, by phone, email, chat or video, plan members and their dependent family members will receive appropriate, timely support for the issue they’re dealing with.

- Keeping you and your clients informed with timely Q&As and announcements, webinars, and insights into the impact of COVID-19 on benefits plans.
As well, to commemorate our 100th Anniversary this year, we donated $4.5 million to purchase and install a new MRI for Grand River Hospital. And we donated $50,000 – $10,000 each – to five charities in British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec. Since the pandemic began, our IT and operations teams have digitally enhanced more than 20 different processes and services to make it easier for us to integrate with our distribution partners in this new reality.
We pride ourselves on our customer service
In 2019, our dedication to customer service was recognized with outstanding survey results.

- A survey of Group consultants, brokers and third-party administrators 2 ranked Equitable Life in the top two insurers across all categories.
For 2020, we continue to deliver service at the same level with no disruptions during this crisis. Our Customer Care Centre remains open to support plan members and can be reached at 1.800.265.4556. And our Client Relationship Specialists are available for Plan Administrator questions and support.

As the global situation continues to evolve, rest assured that Equitable Life is unwavering in our commitments to you and the communities we serve. We are here with you and for you. Please contact your Group Account Executive or myFlex Sales Manager if you have questions or need assistance.
