  3. EZcomplete enhancements for segregated fund applications

    When we launched EZcomplete® for segregated funds back in January we heard a lot of positive comments from our advisors. We also heard that we could do better. So that's just what we did.

    1. FUNDSERV CODE

    Advisors with an active FundSERV code no longer need to remember to select the FundSERV code when starting a new segregated fund application. EZcomplete will now default to the FundSERV code.

    2. LOAN DEPOSIT OPTION
    Under the Contributions section of the segregated fund application for Non-registered, TFSA, RSP or Spousal RSP, Loan is now a deposit option under Deposit Types. If Loan is selected, EZcomplete will ask for amount and Lending Company name. Equitable Life® has partnered with B2B Bank to provide investment and RSP loans at competitive rates. Details can be found on EquiNet® under "Loans".

    3. LIMITING SUCCESSOR ANNUITANT
    Applicable to TFSA, RIF and Spousal RIF applications only, EZcomplete will now use validation to prevent advisors from accidentally naming the same person as both successor annuitant and beneficiary, reducing the instances of "not in good order" applications.

    4. ONGOING PAD FUND SELECTION
    If Ongoing PAD is selected as a Deposit Type, an advisor can allocate the Ongoing PAD to a fund allocation that is different than the rest of the deposit options.

    5. TRANSFER FORM NOTIFICATION
    The MGA and advisor confirmation emails now include text to confirm that a Transfer Form has been uploaded and submitted as part of the segregated fund application. This additional information will act as a reminder to the Advisor/MGA to send the Transfer Form to the relinquishing institution.

    6. POPULATING FIELDS
    Advisors will no longer need to keep entering the same advisor and MGA information on new segregated fund applications. The first time an advisor code is used on an EZcomplete segregated fund application, the advisor will populate all the required fields. Each subsequent time a new segregated fund application is created with the same advisor code, the following fields will pre-populate with the values that were last entered.

    a) Advisor Email
    b) Dealer/MGA Name
    c) Branch Number
    d) MGA Email

  4. Calming client fears about inflation and market volatility
    Watch any news report or read any social media feed and you will see stories about inflation and market volatility. Inflation is one of the reasons that investing in equities is important - they can help to provide long-term returns that offset the effects of inflation. Help your clients stay on track during periods of market volatility and elevated inflation by following a few key investment strategies.

    Time diversification through dollar-cost averaging
    Volatile markets can provide opportunities. While your client may be skeptical, remind them about the benefits of dollar-cost averaging. Dollar-cost averaging adds time diversification, meaning your client buys into the market at different points in time. Regular investing can even allow your client to see growth during times of volatility. To learn more, click here.

    It is time in the markets, not timing the markets that works long-term
    Investing for the long-term allows your client to ride the waves of the investment market. The S&P/TSX Composite Index, for example, has had a compound annual return of approximately 7.8% over the past 25 years.[1]  These returns account for the most recent financial crisis and the dot-com bubble.  Previous market declines have offered buying opportunities for clients who have funds to invest. Keep your clients invested with segregated funds
    Segregated funds, like Equitable Life’s® Pivotal Select™, offer additional benefits beyond those offered by mutual funds and Exchange Traded Funds. Segregated fund guarantees (maturity and death) can protect your clients’ money during periods of market stress. A segregated fund guarantee will provide your client with the better of the guaranteed amount or the market value at the maturity date or date of death. A Pivotal Select segregated fund guarantee can give your client the confidence to stay invested during market uncertainty. The test of a great partner is one who stands tall when you and your clients need to rely on them most. As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, we thought you might find it helpful to have a summary of where we are during this crisis.

    You can download this PDF version to refer to when meeting with your clients.

    We are here with you and for you

    We’ve taken several steps to support you, your clients and their plan members during this crisis, including:

    • Providing premium refunds for insured, non-refund Health and Dental benefits;
    • Waiving the waiting period for short-term disability claimants who tested positive for COVID-19;
    • Extending out-of-country travel coverage for plan members who were unable to return to Canada;
    • Providing increased flexibility for premium payments; and
    • Keeping you and your clients informed with timely Q&As and announcements, webinars, and insights into the impact of COVID-19 on benefits plans.

    As well, to commemorate our 100th Anniversary this year, we donated $4.5 million to purchase and install a new MRI for Grand River Hospital. And we donated $50,000 – $10,000 each – to five charities in British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec. 6. NEW MARKETING MATERIAL! Flexibility for supplemental income with Equimax Equitable has created a new piece to help you understand our new Equimax® illustration feature, Paid-Up Additions (PUA) to Cash Dividends, now available!

    Did you know Equimax clients can switch from the PUA dividend option to the cash dividend option by simply requesting a dividend option change?1,2

    You can illustrate this for paid-up 10 pay and 20 pay Equimax plans! Show clients how they can build in added flexibility and use their policy to create a source of future supplemental income by simply changing the dividend option to cash.3

    Illustration Considerations:
    ● Works with Equimax Estate Builder® or Equimax Wealth Accumulator®.
    ● Illustrate the Excelerator Deposit Option (EDO) to help build the policy values while the PUA dividend option is in effect. EDO payments can’t be made once the policy is switched to the cash dividend option.
    ● If a client needs temporary insurance coverage – like mortgage protection - illustrate term riders for how long they are needed to meet the specific goal.3
    ● If critical illness coverage is needed our competitively priced 20 pay critical illness riders are a great fit to provide paid-up critical illness coverage.3

    Clients should apply for the coverage they need. This concept is about flexibility to create a future source of supplemental income.

    1 Dividends are not guaranteed and are paid at the sole discretion of the Board of Directors.  Dividends may be subject to taxation. Dividends will vary based on the actual investment returns in the participating account as well as mortality, expenses, lapse, claims experience, taxes, and other experience of the participating block of policies.
    2 To request a change to the dividend option complete and submit form 558 (Request for Withdrawal of Dividends, Change in Option, or Premium Offset). A client can request a change to the cash dividend option from any other dividend option regardless of the premium type or whether premiums continue to be payable, subject to our current administration rules and guidelines. Some dividend option changes are subject to underwriting. Underwriting is not required to change from the PUA to cash dividend option, however, underwriting is required to change from the cash dividend option to the PUA dividend option.
    3 This concept is intended to illustrate a one-time switch to cash dividends once premiums are no longer payable for the policy (including premiums for riders). Premiums are paid with after-tax dollars and dividends paid in cash are subject to taxation.  If premiums are payable there will be tax savings for the client to use the before-tax cash dividend to reduce the premium instead of taking it entirely as a cash payment.  This concept is intended for longer term planning, not to meet short term cash needs by switching back and forth between the PUA and cash options. Clients should consider a policy loan or a cash withdrawal to meet short-term cash needs; policy loans and cash withdrawals may be subject to taxation.

  8. Grow your guarantee using resets from Equitable Life
    Did you know that many of Equitable Life®’s segregated funds contracts, including Pivotal Select™ Estate Class and Protection Class, allow for an annual reset of the death benefit guarantee? Now could be a great time to remind clients to lock-in any gains with a death benefit reset; and increase their Death Benefit guarantee to 100% of the current market value. The ability to lock-in market growth using resets is one of the differences between segregated funds and mutual funds.

    To complete a reset, submit the applicable investment direction form. If you have Limited Trading Authorization on file, you can sign the request on your client’s behalf*. The Investment Direction Forms are posted on EquiNet®, or can be found here (by product):

    Be sure to check out the “Growing your Guarantee with Resets” marketing piece which can be shared with your clients. For questions about resets, contact your Regional Investment Sales Manager today.

    *Advisors are required to keep notes of their conversation with their client for audit purposes when completing transactions using Limited Trading Authorization. World Financial Group (WFG) advisors are not permitted to use Limited Trading Authorization as per their agreement with WFG.

  10. Making it easier to claim for Loss of Independent Existence for EquiLiving Critical Illness insuranc We have recently changed the definition of Loss of Independent Existence (LOIE). As a result, the Critical Illness claim criteria has also changed. Before, EquiLiving® Critical Illness insurance coverage was issued with a definition of LOIE that required clients to have the total inability to do 3 of 6 Activities of Daily Living (ADLs). Now, clients will only need to give us proof of the total inability to do 2 of 6 Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) to submit a claim for LOIE.

    This change makes it easier for clients to claim for this covered critical illness. This change is retroactive to February 2022.

    Clients will be sent a notice from us with a personalized endorsement from Equitable Life. This applies to their policy and forms part of their contract. We will approve claims for LOIE as outlined in the endorsement.

    LOIE is one of the 26 conditions named as a covered critical illness in an EquiLiving policy or Critical Illness insurance rider on an Equitable Life insurance policy. With a loss of independent existence, some activities of daily living can no longer be done on one’s own. This can happen because of a disease or an injury.
